Official: from 2021 there will be a new European club competition. The third, after Champions League and Europa League. The OK came from the UEFA Executive Committee, meeting today in Dublin on the occasion of the draw for the Europeans in 2020.
COMPETITION - It will be called UEL2 and, in its structure, will reflect the existing European cups. So 32 teams will participate, divided into eight groups of four teams. Following, eighth, fourth, semi-final and final. A further round will be played before the second round of the second teams of the groups and the third classified in the groups of Europa League. In all, therefore, 141 games spread over 15 weeks, echoing the former UEFA Cup. The winner of the new competition, which will be held on Thursday with some matches scheduled for 16.30, will be eligible for the next edition of Europa League. No variation, in terms of calendar, for the Champions that will continue to play, as usual, Tuesday and Wednesday.
