Italy at risk of relegation: this is how the regulation works

After collecting only one point in the first two days of the Uefa Nations League, Italy is seriously threatened to relegate to League B. The Blues will return to the field on October 14 in Chorzow against Poland and will be forced to collect 3 points to avoid 'last place in Group 3 of the League A. To better understand what scenarios are in front of the Blues we are going to review the rules of this new competition.

THE REGULATION - The 55 European teams are divided into four leagues based on the coefficient in the UEFA ranking for Nationals (1-12 in the League A, 13-24 in the League B, 25-39 in the League C, 40-55 in the League D) . In the League A the 12 teams were divided into 4 groups of 3 teams each.

The 4 winners of the groups 1,2,3 and 4 will play the Final Four (semi-finals and finals) that will award the trophy while the four worst teams relegate to B. The second in the standings remain simply in League A. In the League B the 12 teams were divided into 4 groups of 3 teams each. In this case the 4 winners are promoted in Serie A while the 4 worst ones are relegated to C. In the Lega C the 4 winners are promoted in Serie C while the 4 worst retreats in D while in the Lega D the 4 winners are promoted in Serie C.

INTERNSHIP WITH THE EUROPEANS - There is an interweaving between the Nations League and the qualifications for the Europeans in 2020. The regulation foresees ten groupings with the first two classified in each group that qualify directly and the remaining four places are assigned to the winners of the play-offs. In total there will be six groups of five teams and four groups of six (ten groups in total) that will face each other during ten days: the first two classified of each of the ten groups qualify automatically for the final stages. The last four places will instead be awarded via the qualifying play-offs, which will take place in March 2020 and will be played by the 16 UEFA Nations League group winners. If the group winners have already qualified through the normal qualifiers, their place will go to the team in the next position in their league.

If a league does not have four teams, the remaining seats are awarded to teams from another league based on the overall UEFA Nations League classification. Each league will have its own path, with two semi-finals in a single race and a final in a single race. The winner of each route will gain access to Europeans.
